Union State Bank is proud to recognize Dr. Alvin D. Bird as the 2026 Union State Bank Healthcare Hero. Dr. Bird has provided more than four decades of dedicated service to patients, colleagues and communities throughout south-central Kansas.

Dr. Bird received the honor during the William Newton Healthcare Foundation’s 19th annual fundraising gala on October 10 in Winfield, KS. Presented by Union State Bank, the gala welcomed more than 160 guests and raised nearly $87,000 to support an expansion of William Newton Hospital’s emergency department.

The Union State Bank Healthcare Hero Award recognizes individuals whose service makes a meaningful difference in healthcare and the communities they serve. Dr. Bird exemplifies that mission through a lifetime of caring for others, from his service to his country to his decades of dedication to patients and fellow healthcare professionals.

Introducing the honoree, Cory Helmer, Union State Bank’s Market President for Winfield and Udall, highlighted Dr. Bird’s remarkable career in medicine and his commitment to serving others.

Dr. Bird began practicing medicine in 1982, after an accomplished military career. Following his graduation from Kansas State University, he served in the United States Air Force as a navigator and radar navigator on a B-52 crew. During the Vietnam War, he flew 161 combat missions and was honorably discharged as a captain, earning several military decorations, including the Air Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters.

After completing his pre-medical studies at the University of Missouri, Dr. Bird earned his Doctor of Osteopathy degree from Oklahoma State University and completed his internship at Tulsa Regional Medical Center before returning to Kansas to begin his medical practice.

Throughout his career, Dr. Bird has provided comprehensive general medicine, pediatric and senior care, occupational medicine and minor surgical care. His contributions have helped shape the rural health clinics of William Newton Hospital and strengthen access to care throughout the region.

However, as Helmer noted during the presentation, Dr. Bird’s impact extends far beyond his medical expertise.

Colleagues describe him as a positive, generous and compassionate leader who makes himself available to patients and staff, treats others with respect and consistently looks for the good in people. Mary Torrez, who worked alongside Dr. Bird for more than 15 years at the Kansas Veterans’ Home and Hillside Clinic, praised his friendly nature and generosity, including his willingness to purchase equipment for the clinic and its staff.

Another colleague, Ashley Humphries, emphasized the importance of Dr. Bird’s leadership, saying, “The best doctors don’t just provide extraordinary care to their patients, they uplift, respect, and empower everyone on their team.”

Reflecting on those qualities, Helmer said, “I think the words, ‘brilliance and kindness,’ really capture what makes Dr. Bird such a deserving Healthcare Hero.”

Union State Bank congratulates Dr. Bird on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for the lasting difference he continues to make in south-central Kansas.

“That kind of impact doesn't always show up on a résumé,” Helmer said during the presentation. “It shows up in the people you work with. It shows up in the patients who trust you. It shows up in the community that has been fortunate enough to have you for more than four decades.”

As the presenting sponsor of the annual gala, Union State Bank is also proud to support William Newton Hospital and the foundation’s ongoing efforts to expand and strengthen local healthcare. The funds raised at this year’s event will help advance the hospital’s emergency department expansion, an important investment in meeting the healthcare needs of the communities it serves.
