Union State Bank Vice President and Director of Human Resources Merresa Hanson has been named a 2026 HR Professionals Awards honoree by the Wichita Business Journal. Hanson is one of twenty-eight professionals recognized for their outstanding leadership and impact in the field of human resources. Honorees were featured in the publication’s February 13 print edition.

“These leaders advance the human resources profession through navigating complex issues at their workplaces. They also continue to grow in their roles, keeping abreast of the latest trends through professional development and human resources organizations,” according to Kirk Seminoff, Editor for the Wichita Business Journal.

Hanson brings more than 30 years of experience in human resources to her role at Union State Bank. Originally part of the Midland National Bank team, which merged with Union State Bank in 2020, Hanson now has a combined 20 years of service with the organization.

“I did not intentionally pursue a career in human resources, but once I entered the field, I discovered a genuine passion for fostering trust and building meaningful relationships within organizations,” Hanson explained. “Supporting employees and managers by providing the tools and resources they need to grow, both professionally and personally, is deeply rewarding.”

Throughout her career, Hanson has served as a strategic partner to leadership while remaining a trusted advocate for employees. She believes human resources plays a critical role in strengthening workplace culture and driving organizational success.

“HR professionals serve as a vital link between leadership and employees,” said Hanson. “Contributing to a stronger, more engaged organization is what motivates me every day.”

Hanson attributes her success to strong communication, thoughtful problem-solving and a commitment to building trust through integrity.

“HR is about listening to our people, supporting them and helping them be their best. Remember HR isn’t here to ruin your day. We’re here to help and occasionally explain what business casual means,” Hanson joked.

This is not the first time Hanson has been recognized for her leadership. She was previously honored by the Wichita Business Journal as a 2024 “Women Who Lead in Human Resources” award recipient.

“It’s an honor to be named a 2026 HR Professional Awards Honoree. Thank you to the Wichita Business Journal and everyone at the bank for trusting me to take care of our people,” exclaimed Hanson.
