Union State Bank Promotes Steven Hill to Chief Operations Officer

Union State Bank is pleased to announce the promotion of Steven Hill to Chief Operations Officer. Hill brings nearly four decades of banking and financial services experience to the role, along with a diverse professional background.
Hill has deep Kansas roots, growing up in Kensington and Derby before graduating from Leavenworth High School, where he participated in construction trades programs. He later attended St. John’s College and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business. His career has included working as a securities representative and licensed insurance agent, as well as owning and operating a construction company focused on remodeling homes, roofing and permanent siding.
“After getting my education, I decided I wanted to put it to better use and went to work for the Department of Human Resources, now the Kansas Department of Labor,” Hill said. “I performed tax collections, audits and special investigations before beginning my banking career.”
Hill’s banking career began at The First National Bank of Winfield in December 1987, where he originally expected to work in collections but instead started in the accounting department. Over the years, he served CornerBank as Chief Financial Officer and as a member of its Board of Directors until the bank was acquired by RCB Bank in 2016. He then served as Chief Information Officer at RCB Bank until July 2024 before joining Union State Bank on August 31, 2024 as Director of Projects and Vendor Management.
Hill was drawn to Union State Bank in part by his familiarity with the bank’s leadership. “I wanted to have a job closer to home, and I knew Bill Docking,” he said.
With nearly 39 years in banking and finance, Hill brings extensive knowledge of bank operations, technology, financial management and risk to his new position. He is focused on making banking easier and more convenient for Union State Bank customers while strengthening the organization behind the scenes.
“My goals are to make accessing financial services for our customers the easiest thing they do and create an exceptional customer experience, all while reducing risk for our banking organization,” Hill said.
For Hill, one of the most rewarding aspects of banking has always been the people. “I love the people I work with,” he said. “I’ve always enjoyed working with people to achieve goals and objectives and love it when a successful project is completed.”
Hill also sees tremendous opportunity ahead as technology continues to transform financial services. “The banking industry is on the edge of monumental change with great advancements in technology,” he said. “With AI, instant payments and digital currency coming to fruition, along with distributed ledger technology, banking transactions will become instant. Banks will still need people, and I am excited to see how the future will play out for this industry.”
Outside of work, Hill lives in Winfield with his wife of 24 years and their two sons, Maverick and Hudson. He has three other children, Jacque, Kyle and Taylor, as well as three grandchildren, Isaac, Carson and Madiline. He enjoys working on his home and playing golf when time allows. Hill has also previously served the community through the Legacy Foundation, the Winfield Housing Authority Board and the City of Winfield Planning Commission.
